What the Bible Says About Anxiety

Anxiety is one of the most common things young people carry into a youth room, a Sunday school class, or a pastor's office. Tests, friendships, family changes, and the steady noise of a phone can leave a heart restless. Scripture does not pretend worry is unreal. It speaks to it directly and points us to the God who cares.

Bring everything to God in prayer

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”Philippians 4:6-7 (KJV)

In the KJV, "careful" means full of care, or anxious. Paul does not tell us to stop feeling. He tells us where to take what we feel: to God, "in every thing," with thanksgiving. The promise that follows is not that every problem disappears, but that God's peace will keep, or guard, our hearts and minds.

God cares for you

“Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.”1 Peter 5:7 (KJV)

The word "casting" pictures throwing a heavy load onto someone stronger. The reason we can do it is simple and personal: he careth for you. For a teenager who feels unseen, this short verse is worth memorizing.

One day at a time

“Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.”Matthew 6:34 (KJV)

Jesus spoke these words after pointing to the birds of the air and the lilies of the field. Much of our anxiety lives in tomorrow, in what might happen. Jesus invites us to live faithfully in today and to trust our Father with what comes next.

A mind stayed on God

“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.”Isaiah 26:3 (KJV)

"Stayed" means fixed or resting. Peace grows as our attention returns, again and again, to who God is. Reading Scripture, prayer, and worship are ways of practicing that kind of focus.

Youth group discussion questions

  1. What are some things people your age worry about most?
  2. Philippians 4:6 says "in every thing." Is there anything you feel is too small, or too big, to pray about?
  3. What does it look like, in real life, to "cast" a care on God?
  4. Matthew 6:34 talks about tomorrow. Do your worries live more in the past, today, or tomorrow?
  5. Isaiah 26:3 speaks of a mind "stayed" on God. What is one habit that could help you keep your mind on Him this week?
  6. Who is someone you could pray for who might be anxious right now?

If you are struggling

Worry is part of life, but sometimes anxiety becomes heavy enough that you need more help. That is not a lack of faith. Please talk with a trusted adult, such as a parent, pastor, teacher, or counselor. If you are in crisis or thinking about hurting yourself, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline in the US) any time, day or night. You are not alone.
